Simple Christmas Decorating Ideas
62Decorating for Christmas can sometimes result in little more than a clutter of candles and candy dishes. The tree, which should be the focal point, can be lost in the barrage of figurines and fake snow, cutout crafts and hanging reindeer with crumbling horns.
How can you create a lovely and lively Christmas scheme for your home without spending a lot of money? By keeping it simple.
1. The Blue Scheme
Hang all blue round ornaments on your tree. Add a few white bows to the tree for accent. Set out blue and white candy dishes on silver platters and servers. Include a blue candle in each grouping. Add red or green to the groupings with garland and fern tree branches. Add one large poinsettia plant for a punch of red.
2. The Tree Scheme
This one is all about Christmas trees. Decorate your tree with a variety of ornaments; really fill it up. Use candles and ornaments shaped like Christmas trees for the rest of your decorating. Find unusual depictions of Christmas trees, such as a Picasso style or one made of small crystals. Use actual tree ornaments for accents. For example, place a small ornament next to a ceramic tree to create a centerpiece on your buffet.
3. The Cultural Christmas Scheme
This one may take a little research, but can very rewarding. Read up on how different cultures decorate their Christmas trees and houses for the holidays. Choose one that interests you and create your own version of that culture's celebratory customs.
4. The Slipcover Scheme
This is great for those who don't enjoy decorating their houses but like having a tree. Decorate your tree as you normally would. Cover your couch and chairs in red slipcovers. Add white and green throw pillows and that's it. You're done.
5. The I Have Kids and Have to Go Overboard Scheme
This may seem contrary to the idea of keeping it simple but you can have an extensive decorating scheme and still achieve an uncluttered cohesive look. Allow each child to design a personal vignette. Each child is allowed one candle, two figurines, one ornament and one toy or other holiday item. Give each child a large Christmas themed platter on which to arrange the items. Make sure each child's vignette has a prominent place in the room. Fill in with candy dishes and Christmas mugs filled with candy canes.
These five schemes are easy to do, inexpensive to implement and most importantly, break down quickly. Each allows the tree to be the center of attention and your decorations are simple, elegant and fun.
